How Do I Protect My Assets In A Divorce?

roundup articles divorce finances

One of our readers asked a question recently…

How Do I Protect My Assets In A Divorce?

Here’s the response to that question about ‘how to protect finances in divorce‘.

Are the assets you’re questioning really “yours alone”?

If they are, document why they are yours alone (your money purchased it, you inherited it, you financed it and assume the debt as well, you brought it into the marriage, etc).

If they are community property and shared with your soon to be ex, then make sure nothing is happening to the asset to lower it’s value. Remember the older divorce movies and jokes where one spouse cuts the house in half, so it’s equally shared? Yeah…. That isn’t going to help your asset become more valuable.
